Charges laid after Actress Carly Pope and Brother in wild carjacking in Vancouver [Dec. 30th, 2009|04:34 pm]

ohnotheydidnt

[danmac23]

A Vancouver man has been charged in connection with the dramatic carjacking that damaged five cars and sent four people, including actors Kris and Carly Pope, to hospital on Tuesday morning.

On Wednesday, Crown counsel approved eight charges against 31-year-old David Fomradas, who recently moved to B.C. from Alberta, including:

* Theft over $5,000
* Kidnapping without the use of a firearm
* Two charges of aggravated assault
* Two charges of dangerous driving causing bodily harm
* Assault with a weapon
* Mischief to property over $5,000

Investigators say the incident began shortly after 10:30 a.m. Tuesday when a stranger jumped on to the hood of a black BMW that was stopped at a traffic light.
"He was yelling and appeared to be quite outraged," Const. Anne Longley said.

Kris Pope, who was driving the BMW, left the car to call police.
His sister Carly, who has starred in a number of TV shows including the WB's Popular and Fox's 24, remained in the car.

The stranger then jumped into the driver's seat and put it in reverse, police said, injuring the siblings and a bystander who had tried to intervene.

The car then backed up quickly into oncoming traffic, hitting four other cars before crashing into the glass window of the CBC building located at the corner of Georgia and Hamilton streets.
Police also announced that all three victims had been released from hospital after receiving treatment.

"Their injuries were considered to be minor, varying from sprains, bruises, scrapes and a possible concussion," Longley said.

The suspect, who suffered a skull fracture, was also released and taken into police custody.

No court date has been set.

Robert Pattinson Chips Tooth in Flossing Accident, Says Twilight 3 Co-star

Sure, he looks foul-smelling, but would you believe Twilight star Robert Pattinson is really "incredibly hygienic"? So hygienic, in fact, that he's a threat to himself and his teeth? It's true, claims his Eclipse co-star Bryce Dallas Howard! When we ran into her at the recent New York premiere of her new movie, the Tennessee Williams–scripted The Loss of a Teardrop Diamond (out today), she told us about her first brush with Rob: "I actually came out to him that I was totally nervous about [meeting him]," said Howard, who will replace Rachelle Lafevre as evil vampire Victoria in next year's Twilight 3. "He’s such a sweet young man, and there’s such a distinctive difference between him and Edward Cullen. He does such a wonderful job embodying that character, and bringing that character to life. But when you meet him, he’s such a down-to-earth, humble person, you feel bad freaking out around him."

"But what does he smell like?" we inquired. "Actually, he’s incredibly hygienic," Howard insisted. "He told me this story that made me crack up. He was like, 'Oh, I have to go to the dentist.' And I was like, 'Oh no, what happened? Just a check-up?' And he was like, 'No, I chipped a tooth.' And I was like, 'How?' And he was like, ‘Flossing.’ Who does that? I don’t even floss. So he’s hygienic. Trust me."

It seems Rosie O'Donnell hasn't let herself be lonely for long.

O'Donnell's rep confirmed to People.com that she is dating Texas artist and mother of six Tracy Kachtick-Anders. The couple were spotted strolling hand-in-hand on Miami Beach on Tuesday.

O'Donnell met her new love through her blog, and she was free and easy with the hints about her new relationship well before her rep spoke up about the romance. In addition, O'Donnell has posted photos of Kachtick-Anders and her children on her site.

Of Kachtick-Anders' six children, five are adopted and nearly all have some kind of special needs, Hilton reports. O'Donnell's new love is a writer who created the non-profit organization Open Arms Campaign, a non-profit volunteer organization dedicated to the recruitment of foster and adoptive homes. She also invented the Sleep Tight Wedge, a slumbering aid for infants.

In an interview published back in October, when Kachtick-Anders was asked about her future plans she responded, "I'd like a date with an inspiring woman!"

Looks like her wish has come true.

[nurani]

Erik Gates, an occasional guest on the popular myth testing show Mythbusters died this week following a work-related accident that led to a thirty foot fall.

Gates, the owner of Gateco Electric fell through a skylight on Sunday and suffered blunt force to his chest which led to his death. The accident occurred on the worksite of Xirrus, a company owned by his brother Dirk Gates. Xirrus’ CFO released the following statement:

“He was a good guy,” Steve DeGennaro, Xirrus Inc.’s co-founder and chief financial officer, said Monday. “He survived cancer, he jumps with parachutes, he base jumps. He’s an active guy who was used to taking precautions. This was a freak accident that shouldn’t have happened.”

The two brothers actively maintained a website together: Gates Brother Rocketry. The Mythbusters Twitter feed also sent out their deep regrets with messages that included:

1. Team MB wishes to express our deepest sympathies on the passing of our beloved rocket expert, Erik.

2. You were an honorary MythBuster and will be sorely missed.

Gates, who appeared on the pilot for the show went on to appear in 4 episodes which according to the Inquisitr included: Ming Dynasty Astronaut (2004,) Bullet Proof water, 360 Degree Swing (2005,) and Confederate Rocket (2005.)

Glee lies about the one thing they promised NOT to do [Dec. 30th, 2009|02:49 pm]

ohnotheydidnt

[missthing19]

GLEE creator Ryan Murphy has revealed to Billboard.com that the next installment of GLEE, beginning April 13, 2010 on Fox at 9pm, will feature a whole episode of original music.

Says Murphy:"I've had a lot of calls from songwriters, to the point where it's kind of embarrassing and ridiculous," he says. "So we're writing an episode called ‘Original Song' where the teacher asks the kids to write their own piece of music. Diane Warren is going to do two big ballads, and if it works, we'll see what happens . . . but we won't do it all the time."

One writer who may be contributing to the episode is Ryan Tedder of the band OneRepublic, who co-wrote the song Halo with Beyoncé that appeared on GLEE as part of a mash up with Walking on Sunshine. Tedder tells Idolator.com:

"Glee is actually my new addiction. I download every episode. They actually just approached me. Adam Anders, the guy who does all the music, approached me about two weeks ago to do original music for the next season. So I'm gonna be doing at least one song for the next season that's original."

Source

When I went to Outfest, the producers specifically said they would not be doing original music on the show. And that's how it should be. This doesn't sound very promising, but I guess we'll wait and see.

Salma Hayek's Girls' Day Out [Dec. 30th, 2009|09:57 pm]

ohnotheydidnt

[reesefanforever]
Salma Hayek, along with daughter Valentina Paloma, 2, and stepdaughter Mathide, 9, spent some time at the Grove in Los Angeles on Tuesday (December 29).

Salma’s mother, Diana Hayek, who is in town for the holidays, joined the happy trio on their outing. The lovely ladies made a stop at the ice cream parlor and looked completely content as they strolled along with their tasty treats!

Big sister Mathide was so sweet holding little Valentina's hand as she rode all cozied up in her stroller.

Later that afternoon, Mathide and her 11-year-old brother, Francois, went on a shopping trip to Toys “R” Us with their father, and Salma's husband, François-Henri Pinault.

Ryan Sheckler Loves To Ride _ _ _ _ [Dec. 30th, 2009|02:18 pm]

Ryan Sheckler is all about new ways to improve his skateboarding skills, which is why he’s 100% behind pal Tony Hawk’s new video game, “Ride.”

The 20-year-old X-Gamer boasts, “Everyone’s going to like the game. It’s fun, you know — it’s something different.”

Tony Hawk: Ride is a one-of-a-kind skateboard device that players can actually stand on to perform tricks. It’s got infrared sensors that detect motion so it knows exactly what moves you’re making. Pretty cool, huh?

FYI: Today is Ryan’s 20th Birthday.

Problem with DVD screeners of the only good 2009 movie with "Moon" in the title [Dec. 30th, 2009|04:14 pm]

ohnotheydidnt

[la_petite_singe]

A little dust-up is occurring in the world of Academy screeners.

Apparently, Sony has not included copies of the Sony Pictures Classics film “Moon,” written by Nathan Parker and directed by Duncan Jones, in its package of awards-season screeners. News of this exclusion comes from Jones, who has been tweeting with supporters about the situation, since it severely kneecaps the film’s — and star Sam Rockwell’s — chances at Oscar consideration.

Among Jones’ tweets Wednesday, are these references to Sony and its decision:

“we have more than asked.. we’ve knocked heads. they have chosen the films they are backing & we are not in their plans.”

“They say it costs too much for our little film as they would need to be water-marked copies as our DVD isnt out yet in the US.”

Neil Gaiman has offered his help to Jones via tweet, and others have suggested enlisting Jon Favreau to the cause, since he is rumored to be disappointed by Sony’s disinclusion of “Moon.” (There’s also a petition circulating to get Rockwell an Oscar nomination.)

It’s unlikely that the effort will change any minds at Sony, but it’s invigorating to see another example of filmmakers working outside the blockbuster system — and the filmgoers who support their films — using new technology to fight for exposure. At the very least, these partisans know that their techno-agitating will likely lead to more people seeing the film.

And that’s always the goal.

WTF, not cool. That movie was very original and quite good. Sam Rockwell needs moar love. :(

My BF, Soap Star Scott Evans, Discusses Being Publicly Outed By His Movie Star Brother [Dec. 30th, 2009|03:58 pm]

ohnotheydidnt

[dedebee]

In an interview with We Love Soaps, "One Life to Live's" Scott Evans (Oliver Fish) talks about being publicly outed by his brother, "Fantastic Four" star Chris Evans, in the pages of gay publication The Advocate.

"When that article came out," Evans told the site, "[Chris] took a lot of flack from a lot of his friends who said, 'I can’t believe you did that.' Immediately I got a phone call from him. He left me this message freaking out, 'Are you okay with this? I didn’t mean to do this, I didn’t mean to hurt you.' I was like, 'Dude, I don’t care. It’s as if you said Scott Evans has blonde hair and blue eyes.' It’s who I am, I don’t really care. He was relieved to hear that, but he still comes up and says, Dude, I’m sorry about that. I’m like, I don’t care. I’m glad that he’s comfortable enough to talk about it and he’s not ashamed."

Evans also discussed Rupert Everett's infamous quote about not recommending gay men to come out in Hollywood.

"It’s probably true, and if I’m pigeonholed as a gay character the rest of my life, okay. I don’t mind. I think acting is acting. How you do a role should have nothing to do with your sexual practice as a basis. More and more there are gay roles on everything. I have no problem playing gay, or playing straight, and nobody else should either. But they do!"

The full interview, in which Evans discusses in depth his role as gay cop Oliver Fish on ABC's "One Life to Live," is available at WeLoveSoaps.net.

In related "One Life to Live" news, today, the soap featured Daytime TV's first gay male love scene, between Evans' character and his boyfriend, Kyle Lewis (played by Brett Claywell). I'm sure most people will bitch about how tame it is compared to, say, "Queer as Folk," but just consider that this is daytime network television before you pass judgment.

NBC must be REALLY REALLY REALLY desperate [Dec. 30th, 2009|03:41 pm]

ohnotheydidnt

[devil_details]

A network insider confirms that NBC is in talks to bring back Last Comic Standing, a talent show that ran for six seasons on the peacock network.

NBC’s reality guru Paul Telegdy is looking to re-launch the franchise with a new host (so long, Bill Bellamy!) and some format changes so it can air as part of the network’s summer lineup, which includes America’s Got Talent and (possibly) the new Losing it with Jillian, featuring The Biggest Loser’s Jillian Michaels.

Comic pits comedians against each other in a competition for a development contract with NBC. It last aired during the summer of 2008, when it averaged 5.2 million viewers and a 7 share among adults 18-49. Though it doesn’t necessarily blow the roof off Nielsen, the show performs particularly well among adults 18-49 living in homes with $75K-plus and $100k-plus incomes.

Put your schlongs and melons away: graphic sex and nudity don't sell at the movies [Dec. 30th, 2009|03:49 pm]

ohnotheydidnt

[kiefers]

Filmmakers counting on sexy scenes to make their bank may be surprised by a new study that suggests moviegoers prefer modesty. Above, Robert Downey Jr. in the recently-released 'Sherlock Holmes.'

At least not in the movies, according to one study.

CNN reports that an examination of more than 900 films released between 2001 and 2005 concluded that sex and nudity did not ensure a big box office return, or extra media attention.

The study goes by the ungainly title: "Sex Doesn't Sell — nor Impress! Content, Box Office, Critics, and Awards in Mainstream Cinema." Dean Keith Simonton, a co-author, asserts that the study drew from the largest body of work used for film research.

"Sex did not sell, whether in the domestic or international box office," Simonton, who is a professor of psychology at the University of California, Davis, told CNN. "Even among R movies, less graphic sex is better."

The top-grossing films in the study included movies like "Shrek 2;" "Spider-Man;" "Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith" and "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King," all of which contained just minor to mild sex and/or nudity.

The study was inspired by something experienced a few years back by its co-author, Anemone Cerridwen, according to CNN. She had been taking acting classes and became increasingly uncomfortable with some of the sexualized content she was encountering. That led her to consider to pursuit data about the lucrative aspect of sex in movies.

"I assumed sex sold, and wanted to know by how much," Cerridwen told CNN. "I braced myself for the worst, and got quite the surprise."

Craig Detweiler, director of the Center for Entertainment, Media and Culture at Pepperdine University, said the study's findings reflect the culture's post-sexual revolution sensibilities.

"Nothing is as shocking anymore," he told CNN. "You can see it in Britney Spears' kiss with Madonna and Janet Jackson's Super Bowl performance. Things that were a big controversy among some, the next generation kind of yawned at."

Tom Jacobs, staff writer for the academic research periodical Miller-McCune, wrote about the study and said there has long been the belief that the many young males who make up movie audiences are enthralled by female nudity.

"These researchers really put that belief to the test and crunched the numbers," Jacob said. "What I took from the study is that a hint of sex is perhaps more enticing than out-and-out nudity."

The study's authors hope their findings have some direct impact on moviemaking.

"I do believe that there are a fair number of people in the film industry who want to make better films, and this study may give them some ammunition," Carridwen told CNN. "I know that Hollywood has been trying to make more family-friendly films for a while (since the '90s) and it seems to be helping ticket sales, so my guess is that this research would complement that."

"Thriller" going into National Film Registry [Dec. 30th, 2009|03:23 pm]

"The red leather jacket. The yellow eyes. The zombies. The dance. That laugh. Think what you want about the late man himself, but videos don't come much more culturally significant than Michael Jackson's "Thriller."
Which is exactly why the Library of Congress has seen fit to include the groundbreaking 1983 music video as one of the 25 films to be added to the National Film Registry this year.
The preserving body typically selects films that are "culturally, historically or aesthetically significant." Not to mention films that are, well, actual films.
